At the longest night of the year, Fanelia held its Festival of Parting. At the midnight hour, with all fires in the country down to embers, and wrapped in his warmest cloak, Van climbed the highest tower, with Merle following on soft cat footsteps, holding a single candle.

The other candles waited. Merle lit her two for her parents, then passed him the candle for his. One for his father, and one for his mother. One for Folken, one he could finally light with certainty. One for Balgus, and a fat one for the people lost to Zaibach.

And, though she wasn't dead, one for Hitomi, though she'd probably be mad for him having it. It wasn't bone-white, as all the others were, but the blue of one alive, but not by one's side. Merle pressed her hand on his as he lit that one, a silent acknowledgment that she missed the girl from the Mystic Moon too.

Tomorrow, the King of Fanelia would lead the New Year's Feast, in light and laughter. Tomorrow night, Van would gaze at the sky and tell her every detail. But he was allowed one night of nostalgia for what might have been.
