Summary: Jim Kirk made amends with Spock and became friends, but that doesn't mean he understands what Spock thinks is a good time.
Disclaimer: Star Trek copyright Gene Roddenberry/Paramount Pictures, and this derivative work was created without permission.
Jim Kirk wasn't sure he 'got' Spock's idea of a good date, and he didn't think he ever would. Not that he really objected -- even if Spock wasn't with Nyota Uhura, having a friend who wasn't likely to be more interesting at parties than you was a good thing. But it still was weird as all hell-- whenever he saw the two of them together in in the officer's lounge or on brief stopovers on Starbases, they were usually seated across from one another over some type of game, or reading, Uhura leaned up against Spock, but both lost in books. Maybe he might catch them in a quiet conversation or Uhura bent over some musical instrument, Spock guiding her hands to the correct places. They didn't seem to go out during stopovers, and the rumor mill had been surprisingly slow to pick up on things At least, according to Bones, who seemed to hear everything as a result of being the ship's doctor and 'sob-story magnet' -- his words, when telling Jim that they needed to tell Starfleet Medical to put a psychiatrist on this boat so he could get some damn peace.
If Jim didn't know better, he wouldn't have known Spock and Uhura were dating at all. Hell, even his attempts to talk about women with Spock were brushed off with a sort of detached air, and the blunt statement that Spock's love life was private, even to friends. If this was how Vulcans dated, no wonder they lived so long -- it would take them twice as long as humans to get to having baby Vulcans.
Take today, when he came off-duty and saw the two of them playing some type of tile game. There were letters printed on the tiles -- Jim was no linguist, but he was pretty sure most of them didn't belong in the same alphabet. As he approached, he saw Uhura put down several tiles in a row. Spock nodded, making a note on the PADD sitting at the side of the game board. "Hey, Spock," Jim said, uncertain if, even with his better-than-average hearing, that the Vulcan had heard him approach over the sounds of other crew in the room. "Mister Scott said to tell you that the transporters are working again."
They had been in orbit around some dirtball of a planet, and Spock had insisted on taking samples of the local flora. First attempt on a shuttle had resulted in all the samples returned resembling compost and smelling like gym sneakers. Hence, the transporter, and quick removal to a lab. Preferably with closed circulation, since the bad smell was even worse for healthy plants -- he'd decided that today was suddenly a good time to remember the regulations about the captain's presence on away teams.
Spock nodded, indicating that he had heard him. "Thank you, Captain." He played down some tiles. "All seven letters used. That's an extra fifty points. In addition, the second letter is on a triple-word score." He marked the score. "Since you are out of tiles, I believe I win."
"Next time, you're getting a handicap," Uhura replied.
Jim really did not get Vulcan ideas of fun.

After she thought Kirk was out of earshot, Nyota met Spock's eyes. "I didn't think you knew that word in Klingon," she said, giving him a slow smile.
"Are you challenging my word?" he replied, giving her a raised eyebrow. "It is rather late, if that is the case."
Nyota made a thoughtful sound in the back of her throat. "Maybe I will later."

I totally blame
memlu for this. She mentioned Klingon Scrabble. Which reminded me of trying to play bilingual scrabble in Spanish class. And I can totally buy Spock and Uhura trying to come up with a variant of bilingual scrabble, perhaps played with IPA (or equivalent) sounds instead of traditional letters. (She also beta'd it, and said 'You need to post this now'.
I worked in some Original Series canon -- mostly that Uhura and Spock both had musical interests, and that few people one off-Vulcan knew much about pon farr. (IIRC, Original Series Kirk and the crew didn't learn about it until Spock didn't get his assigned leave at the right time, and he had to explain why he needed to go to Vulcan right now.)
The (unnamed) planet is a tribute to Roanoke Colony from The Last Colony/Zoe's Tale by John Scazli. Mainly in the smell.
Also, I was kinda picking on Kirk. Poor Kirk. The (straight) geek girls dig Spock more than you.
