Summary: Prison isn't as bad as Mai thought, because Ty Lee was there and Azula wasn't.

Prison wasn't that bad. Sure, Mai was trapped there, with horrible food, awful clothing, boredom and lack of privacy, but somehow Ty Lee managed to make the whole thing bearable, whether it was her ability to make friends with everyone, her goal of founding the first Fire Nation Prison Acrobatics Troupe, or her sheer amiability. Even when she grated on Mai's nerves, it still was a familiar and comforting sensation.
Plus, the lack of Azula was always a distinct improvement.
The day before Sozin's Comet, the prisoners were herded into the yard, and read a proclamation from Firelord -- now Phoenix King -- Ozai, proclaiming his supreme rulership, and elevating Princess Azula to Firelord Azula.
That night, until the comet passed, Mai found Ty Lee refusing to let go of her, for fear of Auzla, her spirits dampened by the shadow stretching over their unlikely haven.
