Folken had been living as a dead man since he lost his arm and his country. He could have gone home, a failure and a burden, and set his brother on the path to face those same dragons. Instead, he let himself pass beyond the selfish needs of his own self, dying so that Zaibach's strategos could be born. All that remained was his last wish -- keep my younger brother safe.
The pain of the mechanical arm, the eventual death from exposure to fate alteration, even facing down Dornkirk: all of that was easy. Folken was already dead.
