day_by_drabble, Prompt #2: [picture of fireworks]
Summary: Mal's out picking fights on Unification Day, so Kaylee and River have nothing much to do.

It was Unification Day, and Jayne and Zoe had to go drag Mal out of whatever bar he was going to get himself tossed out of. It also meant Simon couldn't take River to the fireworks over the bay, because someone had to patch Mal after.
There hadn't been much to celebrate last year, what with Miranda making news. Folks were hurt, but some folks were shocked enough to start squawking. Simon thought things would get better, even if Mal was still being Captain Grumpy about it and not inclined to think anything of the Alliance was worth saving.
Kaylee wasn't sure which one was right. She curled up on the top of Serenity's hull, high enough to see over the port's buildings, with River balanced beside her like she belonged there, which she did. Regardless of what the Alliance did, Serenity would keep flying.
With breaks for fireworks on the Alliance's credits.
