As a courtier, Shoukei was entitled to clothing and jewelry befitting her rank. Even in Youko's informal court, the clothing was still many layers of fine material, with trailing sleeves and long hems. Shoukei did not sit easy in them. Princess Shoukei hadn't noticed these luxuries. Citizen Shokei had fought against their lack, still believing herself a princess. But now she knew the cost: Heaven allowed the King and her court these fine things to compensate for their great responsibility. It meant that Shoukei could not feel easy in her finery until she had earned the right to wear them.
