Lee normally rushed to finish his morning chores every day so he could go out, but today they were doing more than just school and playing with the other boys in town. The morning was a bit chilly, the last breath of winter in the air, and Lee actually remembered his jacket for once, without Hester or his father reminding him.
He was headed out for the pasture, Hester in tow. She was spending more and more time on the ground as a hare, and the older boys said that meant she was probably going to end up like that. Which was fine with Lee -- she made a darn pretty hare, but he would miss her changing, to be a bird and tell him how things looked from ten feet up, or a frog to see what the fish were doing in the pond. Still, there were worse things. Frank Marshall's daemon had decided she was going to be a hummingbird, and this had meant he was teased a bit for it.
They finally got into the pasture, and Lee saw what he was looking for. "Hester, can you be a bird for me?"
"Sure thing, Lee," and she was -- a meadowlark.
The two worked together to cut the flowers -- bluebonnet and Navajo's paintbrush and other things that grew, with Lee carefully trimming the stems with his pocket knife. Around lunchtime he returned home, and brought the flowers to his parents' bedroom. He took his mother's hands, feeling the rough texture and the Navajo ring she wore, and giving a polite nod to her daemon, who was curled up at her feet. "Happy Birthday, Ma. I figured since you can't be going outside with your cough, I'd bring the springtime in to you."
