"Merle?" Hitomi paused from packing her bag. Van had given her a room in one of the less damaged parts of the city, where she could prepare to go home. She had already said her goodbyes to the Asturians, and was finally ready to leave. Tomorrow, it would be.

"I'm not going through your stuff, and I didn't take anything out of your bag," the catgirl replied from her perch on the chair.

"No, it wasn't that," she said. "I mean, you like Van, right?"

"Of course I like Lord Van," she said, standing up and stretching. "We grew up together when my parents died."

"No, I know that. I mean, do you like Van?" Hitomi asked, flushing a bit.

Merle paused, staring at her, as if trying to catch her meaning. She suddenly sat down, licking at the back of her hand absently. "I don't want to be his girlfriend or anything. I just want him to pay attention to me. And for him to be happy, and not marry some weirdo or creep or floozie."

Hitomi thought of Naria and Eriya, the two catgirls that had loved and served Folken until the end. "Tell him that. Make sure he knows how much you care about him. Even if you aren't his girlfriend. All right?"

"Sure, whatever." Merle gave her another weird look. "You're a strange girl, Hitomi. But I'm going to miss you. Van likes you, and you aren't a weirdo or creep or floozie."

Hitomi got up, and hugged the catgirl. "I'm going to miss you, too."

Merle jumped back. "Hey, watch it. Don't cry on me, okay?"
