"It's not coming off!" Miss Lina scrubbed harder at the skin on her arm, hard enough to make Amelia wince. Who knew that there was a certain type of minor demon that shed brightly colored probably-blood when wounded? And especially when blown up. Amelia had had to drag in the entire staff of the local temple to reassure the innkeeper that the four of them weren't contagious after they had finally made it back to civilization, and they still had to pay extra to make up for the other guests at the inn leaving.
And, no matter how long they sat in the baths, and how much soap, water, and elbow grease they used, it wasn't coming off. It had even soaked through their clothing to color the skin beneath.
Miss Lina threw the sponge at the wall, where it bounced. She was probably about five minutes from blowing something up from frustration, which was what had gotten them in this mess. "Hey, Zel? You still got that pad of steel wool?" she hollered over to the men's side of the baths, separated by a wall from the women's side. "Throw it over here!"
Amelia winced again. "Miss Lina, think of your complexion! Even Mister Zelgadis didn't use that on his skin every day, and he's made of rock."
"I am! I'm not going to go through the rest of my life with blue skin!"
* * *
On the other side of the wall, Zelgadis tried to look as small as possible, by sinking under the water until it came up to his eyes.
Gourry, meanwhile, had grabbed the caddy holding their bath stuff and was digging through it. "Cheer up, Zelgadis! She didn't mean it like that."
Zelgadis muttered something back, unheard thanks to the water.
"Besides, with the rest of us looking all splotchy, I'll bet no one will notice you're a chimera! It was kind of lucky if you think of it that way, since you can hardly see where you were hit with demon blood."
Zelgadis sighed. It was going to be a long couple of weeks until this wore off, and he wondered if he could wander away from his friends until their skin cleared up.
