The campsite was built against the north side of a rock, in what passed for shade in the desert. It wasn't much of one -- not even a firepit in the heat. It was midmorning, and hot already, too hot to be out in the sun. Zelgadis took a sip from his canteen, closing it quickly, and consulted his map. The next town should be within a night's walk, and he could replenish his dwindling food supplies -- at least his magic could provide him with enough water.
He spread out his bedroll -- the ground was hard and parched, and the bedroll would cushion that somewhat. Glancing at his canteen, he removed the bracelet from it. Cradling the blue glass orb in his hand, he activated the Vision spell Amelia had placed on it.
An image formed within the glass, a familiar face in the wasteland. She smiled at him. "Good morning, Mister Zelgadis."
"Good morning, Amelia. Are you free to talk?"
She paused for a moment. "I think so, yes. I should be until lunchtime at least. How are you? We last spoke... a week ago, wasn't it?"
Zelgadis nodded. "I've taken a turn towards the coast. I should be there in another week." He paused, wanting to say something about the shopkeeper last week that had offered him some advice on travel when he had bought his last map, the truly horrible inn food two days ago that would have caused Lina to throw a fit, the beautiful sunset that greeted him when he woke up last. How silly he felt, sitting here in the desert, talking to her through a gem on a piece of jewelry.
"That's good to hear," she said, after a moment. She frowned a bit -- mostly visible in the change in her eyes. "You looked like you were about to say something, Mister Zelgadis."
"What? Oh, nothing." Nothing important, at least, just mundane trivia.
"All right." She still had a faint frown on her face -- sometime since he had met her, she had gotten perceptive. He saw her sudden glance to the side, listening to something outside the spell's range. "Mister Zelgadis, I'm going to have to say goodbye now. Something's come up that I can't put off."
He wanted to offer his help, almost did, but then remembered that he was sitting in a desert, weeks away from her. "Goodbye, Amelia."
But, she had already ended the spell, and all that remained was a blue glass talisman.
