Winry was grateful for her apprenticeship because of the knowledge she was gaining. She'd learned the difference between the way Granny had done things and how various people in Rush Valley worked, as she watched them and occasionally had to repair another mechanic's work.
She also liked it because it meant she had things to do besides worry about Edward and Alphonse. Winry didn't know much about what the two of them had gotten into, but she remembered hearing of Mister Hughes' death. And other things. Darker things. Things she knew Ed would never tell her, out of some desire to protect her.
She waited for the letter saying they were done and safe and waiting, for the date their train would carry them home for good. The news that somehow Ed had done the impossible and righted what was wronged all those years ago when Al had shown up in at their door with a borrowed body and his bleeding brother in his arms. At that moment, she knew, short of being in the middle of an operation, she would pack a nightgown and change of clothing and head to the train station, to meet them at Risenbool and welcome them home.
