Julian glanced behind him and listened for hoofbeats. The other bandits had to have noticed their prisoner was missing by now, even if he hadn't taken both of Lena's staves when he sprang her. But there was no pursuit. Yet.

Lena stumbled over the rough hillside and Julian reached out a hand to steady her. "Careful."

Lena nodded, giving Julian a shaky smile, and Julian wondered if it was just a pretty face that had him helping the cleric escape, or if whatever whisps of morals he had left drew the line at 'find out what money they could extort from the church'. There'd even been rumors that the cleric was a refugee from Macedon, and their armies needed anyone they could coerce.

"I'm certain we'll find someone who will help us," Lena said, but Julian could see worry in her eyes as well.

"You think so?" he asked.

"A good deed like yours deserves a reward."

"As long as the reward isn't a sword in my back," Julian answered. He thought he spotted archers on the heights. That wasn't a good sign. But there was a dust cloud on the road ahead, though, which might be a better one.
